Dr Abdelsalam Ben Saaud is an experienced educator and academic leader whose teaching spans postgraduate medical education, cardiovascular medicine, medical professionalism, human factors, and patient-safety science. His work integrates evidence-based pedagogy, clinical expertise, and educational innovation to strengthen learning across the health professions.
He serves as Academic Lead for Ireland’s first MSc/PGDip in Professionalism in Medicine & Health Sciences, where he designed and operationalised a comprehensive curriculum grounded in international frameworks (GMC, IMC, CanMEDS, ABIM, WHO) and delivered through blended, interactive, and simulation-enhanced approaches. His teaching emphasises learner-centred design, reflective practice, ethical decision-making, and the development of professional identity across all levels of training.
Dr Ben Saaud teaches and supervises across a wide range of areas, including:
- Cardiovascular & Acute Care Pathways: cardiovascular assessment, risk management, perioperative optimisation, acute clinical reasoning, and preventive medicine.
- Professionalism & Ethical Practice: professional behaviours, accountability, reflective practice, complex decision-making, leadership, and identity formation.
- Patient Safety & Human Factors: communication, escalation, situational awareness, team performance, and systems-based approaches to safety science.
- Research Methods & Scholarship: critical appraisal, systematic reviews (Cochrane), biostatistics, mixed-methods research, and postgraduate dissertation supervision.
- Simulation-Supported Education: high-fidelity case-based scenarios, non-technical skills training, OSCE-style assessment, hybrid and digital learning modalities.
He has taught at undergraduate, postgraduate, and specialist levels across RCSI and the University of Galway, delivering case-based learning, simulation-supported sessions, blended teaching, and early clinical preparedness modules. He mentors postgraduate learners, supervises research projects, and contributes to faculty development through training in feedback, assessment, and reflective supervision. Across all programmes, Dr Ben Saaud’s teaching is characterised by a commitment to excellence, inclusivity, professionalism, and patient-centred practice. He is particularly focused on supporting learners’ development of critical thinking, professional behaviours, ethical reasoning, and high-acuity decision-making, ensuring that graduates are prepared for modern clinical practice and lifelong learning.
