BIOGRAPHY

I am an interdisciplinary scientist interested in the human-environment or One Health interface, especially as it pertains to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). My specific areas of interest within this area include water, wastewater, livestock, and animal exposures. I am also interested in investigating AMR burden in underrepresented groups (i.e. rural populations) and how social inequality (i.e. healthcare and infrastructure access inequality) impacts the risk and burden of AMR.

My current work focuses on innovative water disinfection technologies to reduce AMR in water and wastewater systems. Prior to this, I was a postdoctoral fellow (Fulbright alumna), in the Microbiology, Advanced Genomics and Infection Control Application Laboratory (MAGICAL), Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. My research focused on genomics as it pertains to antimicrobial resistance, bacterial infections, and SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. My PhD research, conducted in the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, USA, focused on antimicrobial compounds and AMR in irrigation water sources in the West Bank, Palestine.

I have 15 years of research experience, including diverse and interdisciplinary training in infectious disease research from the molecular to the population level. My experience includes six years of experience with water research, three years of experience with research project management involving genomics and public and environmental health research, including integrating clinical data into environmental health projects, and two years of experience with wastewater-based epidemiology.
