TEACHING AND SUPERVISION OVERVIEW

In my role as Executive Vice Dean for Education, I have developed/implemented a number of new CPDs supporting the needs of health care providers at the current time. Some of those are targeting clinical skills/knowledge gaps while other aim to support personal and professional development of individuals working in healthcare.

Prior to taking up this post at the RCSI, I completed a 3-year term as Head of the School (HOS) of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health, at DCU. This is one of the largest and most complex schools in the University. We delivered programmes at undergraduate and post-graduate level across nursing, psychotherapy and community health and hosted 1450 students across taught programmes as well as 50 post-graduate research students. As HOS I was the direct line manager for 70 staff members and managed a budget of approximately €7 million. During my term as HOS I led the strategic planning and operations which determined the new School’s identity and direction over the next 3 – 5 years. I led the School throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most challenging periods in history for Higher Education. Responding to the pandemic required agile, flexible and empathetic leadership on my part to ensure that DCU’s commitments to students were delivered. My role as HOS involved close collaboration with my own School staff, staff of the Faculty of Science & Health, wider university colleagues and the University’s Senior Management Team, In addition, it involved Chairing the Joint Local Working group with 15 Clinical Partner Sites at Director of Nursing/Practice Development Co-ordinator level, regular engagement with the HSE, the NMBI, the DOH, the RCSI Hospital’s Group and the IUA group. During the pandemic our School supported the national emergency response by establishing a Contact Tracing Centre. I was responsible for developing the risk register and for workload allocation for staff.

From 2014 to 2017 I was the Associate Dean for Research for the Faculty of Science & Health, at DCU with responsibility for 6 schools including Nursing & Human Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Biotechnology and Health & Human Performance. During this role I led strategic and operational functions which included formulating and implementing policies relating to staff and student research activity in the Faculty, chairing the Faculty Research Committee, membership of the University’s Research Committee and the Graduate Research Studies Board, chairing the post-graduate research exam boards as well as chairing a number of staff and student research funding schemes (travel, conference attendance, Outstanding Graduate Researcher awards and PhD. scholarships).

From 2011 to 2014 I was Deputy Head of the School of Nursing and Human Sciences at DCU with responsibility for workload allocation for all academic staff in the school, staff expenses sign-off and the Full Economic Costing (FEC) carried out at the end of each financial year. I have also been the Director of the Healthy Living Centre and Director of Academic Practice in the School.
