BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Niamh Coffey is a Senior Lecturer in Restorative and Primary Care Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), where she serves as module co-ordinator for Clinical Dental Practice and Lead for Simulation. With over 13 years of combined clinical and academic experience, her work focuses on the intersection of systemic and oral health, dental education, and periodontal tissue regeneration.
Dr Coffey holds an MFDS from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) and a PhD from University College Cork, where her research on the oral health of adults with cystic fibrosis included the largest clinical study of this population to date. In 2026, she was awarded a Fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the RCPSG. Her current research spans dental education, maternal oral health, the impact of non-cigarette tobacco and nicotine products on the oral environment, and inclusive oral health.
She has published widely and received several prestigious awards, including the Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize, the John Zamet Prize in Periodontal Research, and the IADR Dental Health Foundation Prize. In addition to her teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students, she continues to practice as a general dentist in County Cork.
Dr. Coffey contributes actively to the profession through her roles on the editorial board of the Journal of Tissue Viability, the Scientific Committee of the Dental Health Foundation, and is a committee member of the Irish Division of the International Association for Dental Research.
