IMPACT AND ENGAGEMENT OVERVIEW

Dr. Eoin O’Neill’s research has advanced understanding of how immune mechanisms shape brain health across the lifespan, identifying novel molecular targets for neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders. His work has revealed that neonatal infection with Bordetella pertussis disrupts blood–brain barrier integrity, triggering long-term neuroinflammatory and behavioural abnormalities relevant to autism spectrum disorders. In parallel, his investigations into sex-specific microglial dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease have highlighted immune-metabolic mechanisms contributing to disease susceptibility in females. Dr. O’Neill’s ongoing research at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland explores Arginase-2 as a regulator of neuroinflammation and metabolism in epilepsy, with translational potential for new therapeutic interventions. Collectively, his work bridges neuroimmunology, metabolism, and translational neuroscience, informing future strategies for preventing and treating neurological disease.
