BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Pilar Luz Rodrigues is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), based in the School of Population Health. She is currently working on the NEIC-HEALTH Project, a Community Health Needs Assessment of Dublin's North East Inner City (NEIC), funded by the NEIC Initiative and the HSE.

Before joining RCSI, Dr. Rodrigues held two postdoctoral research positions at the University of Galway. At the Centre for Global Women’s Studies, she worked on the Higher Education Authority (HEA) funded project “Embedding EDI in University of Galway”, which examined intersectional discrimination experienced by students in higher education with the aim of developing an index of intersectional discrimination. In the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, she contributed to the Research Ireland funded “Rural Villages, Migration, and Intercultural Communication” (VICO) project, which explored the experiences of migrants and refugees living in rural communities in Ireland, focusing on language related barriers and opportunities and their impact on integration and everyday life.

Prior to the University of Galway, she worked as a Research Assistant at the South East Technological University (SETU) on social and health-related research projects, including an Irish Cancer Society funded study on energy poverty and palliative care at home. During her time at SETU, she also obtained funding for the project “Understanding Race Equality in the South East”, funded by the SETU EDI Fund.

Dr. Rodrigues is a sociologist whose work centres on marginalised communities, with a particular focus on migration, racial and gender equality, and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). She has worked across academic, international organisation, and NGO contexts, including with the United Nations agency for migration (International Organization for Migration - IOM), the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS), and Crosscare Migrant Project.

She is Co-Convener of the Sociological Association of Ireland (SAI) Race and Ethnicity Study Group and a member of the European Sociological Association (ESA) Sociology of Migration Research Network. She serves as Co-Chair of Brazilian Academics in Ireland (BAI), and was also a member of the HIDDEN COST Action project “History of Identity Documentation in European Nations: Citizenship, Nationality and Migration” (2023-2026).

Dr. Rodrigues is also research subcommittee member of Endo Ireland (the Endometriosis Association of Ireland), and Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Advisory Board Member and EDI Champion at SETU.
