RESEARCH OVERVIEW

Dr. Hodgkinson's research seeks to understand the fundamental cellular processes controlling bone and cartilage health, disease and repair. Using these insights, the Hodgkinson Lab focuses on the development of regenerative strategies for osteochondral repair and the treatment of chronic degenerative conditions, such as osteoarthritis. Our laboratory has particular interest in three overarching research themes i) cellular mechanobiology, including modulation of mechanically driven inflammatory processes and the use of dynamic mechanical stimuli to control stem cell fate decisions, ii) development of biomaterial-mediated non-viral nucleic acid delivery systems, and iii) manipulation of cell epigenetic and metabolic processes to reverse age-related tissue degeneration. Although our research centres around skeletal tissue regeneration, as part of the wider Tissue Engineering Research Group at RCSI, the Hodgkinson Lab works to develop adaptable, advanced regenerative biomaterial platforms and technologies for application in diverse tissue environments and diseases.
