DrSiobhan McCarthy

Dr McCarthy's research interests are in healthcare quality and safety focusing on the evidence base for effective quality improvement and interventions to enhance quality and safety. Siobhan has particular interest in implementation science studies incorporating effectiveness-implementation designs, health economic evaluation and behaviour change theory. Currently, Siobhan is co-investigator on a HRB/HSE funded study measuring the effect of After Action Review on safety culture and second-victim experience and its implementation in an Irish Hospital. In collaboration with the RCSI Healthcare Outcomes Research Centre among others, Siobhan is leading a programme of research on the competencies and resources for incorporating information about cost and outcomes into decision-making about quality improvement work.

Previously Siobhan has evaluated the effect of online patient safety education on junior doctor's safety knowledge, beliefs and practices. On behalf of the Irish Hospice Foundation, Hospice Friendly Hospitals Programme, Siobhan has developed and tested methodology for surveying bereaved relatives about the quality of end-of-life care their relatives received while dying in hospitals. On behalf of the Irish Medical Council, Siobhan has led a multi-stakeholder study of medical-regulation in Ireland.
