BIOGRAPHY
After completing his BSc (Hons) in Biology at Durham University, Tom Hodgkinson graduated with a MSc (Dist.) in Bioscience from the University of Leeds in 2008. He then went on to complete his PhD in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Manchester, graduating in 2014. Tom’s postdoctoral training focused on the development of regenerative strategies for osteochondral repair. In 2015, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Stephen Richardson and Prof. Judith Hoyland (University of Manchester) to investigate the potential of a therapeutic growth factor for the treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration. Subsequently, he joined Prof. Matthew Dalby’s laboratory (University of Glasgow) to investigate using nanoscale vibration to control mesenchymal stem cell differentiation. He joined RCSI in 2019 to develop regenerative biomaterials for gene delivery to attenuate inflammation in cartilage repair. Through this research, Tom was able to win a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship in 2020 focused on further development of this technology. Dr. Hodgkinson joined the Department of Anatomy and Regenerative Medicine as a Research Lecturer in 2022, where his current research focuses on development of regenerative strategies for osteochondral repair and the treatment of chronic degenerative conditions, such as osteoarthritis.
